Chasing Your Tail in Online Marketing

In the online marketing arena, especially regarding network marketing, the amount of information, training, techniques, tools, and strategies that exists can be overwhelming.  And new stuff seems to gush out every week about blogging, article marketing, opt in pages, capture pages, video marketing, SEO, affiliate marketing, pay-per-click, e-mail marketing, e-books, webinars, teleseminars, copywriting, viral marketing, social sites, black hat techniques, white hat techniques, and social bookmarking.

This information overload can kill our efficiency or even lead to complete shutdown. Before too long we feel completely overwhelmed and lost!  The high hopes we had when we initially discovered the importance of all these skills for lead generation and marketing begin to dwindle as we realize that there’ll never be enough time to learn, apply, and utilize all of them, to say nothing of the expense.  How many books, software, and courses have you purchased?

I was spending so much time reading and learning that there was hardly any time left to take the action required for successful results.

One especially frustrating day I pictured myself as one of those dogs that waits at the side of the road, eager to pursue the next car that passes by.  Rover chases it for awhile and doesn’t catch it.  But soon he’s after the next one.  And so on, so on.  Well, I’ve finally stopped chasing every vehicle that comes by!

In the first place, who knows if each of those vehicles was worth chasing?  Some online marketing techniques are advertised with a lot of hype but they don’t work at all for the average individual.  Our time and monetary resources are very valuable and we have to be selective in where we invest them.

Now I try to do a thorough job of checking marketing tools and programs out.  I want to be sure that they’ll work and that they can be implemented and maintained in the time I have available each day.

Secondly, I realized that it was foolish to try to pursue a new marketing technique until I had mastered the last one or had at least given it enough effort to make it work.  In this regard, commitment at the start is very important.  As “Broadway” Joe Namath, New York Jets quarterback reportedly said after the Jets won the Super Bowl many years ago “If you don’t intend to go all the way, why go at all?”  And who needs another e-book taking up space on their desk or a piece of software taking up space on their hard drive, unused and eventually forgotten?

These days I imagine myself as one of those performers who spins plates on top of poles.  I don’t put a new plate up until I’ve got the others spinning.  And I make sure I’ve got the best plates for my performance.  They’re not cracked and they don’t have holes in them.  Other’s have used them successfully in their show, and they come highly recommended.

If you’re suffering from internet marketing information overload, and you’re not sure what’s working now, mentors and recognized experts can be a great resource.

Just remember, don’t chase EVERY car that comes down the road.
